A mistake we all make whilst going through anxiety & panic attacks is that we are constantly fighting the sensations. The smallest of things is setting us off and making us panic.
'Do not run away from fear. Analyse it and see that it is no more than a physical feeling. Do not be bluffed by a physical feeling.' - 'Self Help For Your Nerves' - Dr Claire Weekes
This can sound daunting at first and maybe even seem impossible to accomplish! But the second you stop running from fear and just let it happen, you will feel better and be on your way to recovery.
Accept yourself for how you are, know that you will get worried, but don't let it stop you doing things you want to do.
Just the other day I was asked to go along with a friend to pick up a table & chairs. I quickly rushed together and locked up my house and got in the truck to go.
By the time we had got no more than 200 meters from the house, I was terrified, my chest felt tight, I felt dizzy, like I was going to die. But when I stop & remind myself, there is nothing wrong with any of these sensations, they cannot hurt me. In fact, they are the very things that are keeping me alive in some cases.
Panic attacks can NOT physically hurt you. Think back to any anxiety or panic attack you have had and realise that you are still here today to tell the tail. Anxiety and panic will NOT rule your life!
I found that also knowing that when you panic, adrenaline is released into your blood stream, the rush will last 3 minutes, its only a chemical reaction, nothing to worry about.
So just try to remind yourself it is temporary, and it will be over within 3 minutes so long as you let it happen and don't fight it.
At first this is going to be difficult for some, don't be disheartened. Its gets easier & easier, until you don't even realise your doing it!
I live in England and used to be scared to get into a car. Now I am traveling and am currently in Australia!
Remember, you can get through this with a little help. Don't try to overcome this by yourself, many people deal with anxiety every day.
You're not alone,
Stay strong.
